It’s probably no secret by this point that my hair is naturally curly. It’s not ringlet curly like some girls I know are blessed with, but it certainly has a lot of dimensionality to it. And the more I’ve worn it curly, the curlier it seems to become. As a result, over the years I’ve found my must have curly hair products.
Why the Right Curly Hair Products are Important
If it weren’t for the curly hair products I’m about to share with you, I would still be stuck in my high-school state of despair. For years I stared back into my own green eyes in the mirror and wondered what in the world to do to look beautiful. In hindsight, I know I was always beautiful, but the truth is, I didn’t understand my hair well enough to style it in a way that was ideal for my hair type.
When I finally found the right shampoo and conditioner and then the right leave in cream and then the right comb and then the right hair-ties, I slowly but surely came into confidence. I was proud of what I was looking at in the mirror. I looked like me. No more curling irons and straighteners were needed (though I do still like to break them out for a more mature look sometimes). I grew into loving my hair and the uniqueness of it as though it were an extension of my personality.
It’s much more about the journey to taking care of and discovering yourself than it is about the outward appearance. No one may have known I was struggling with my hair on the daily from middle school all the way into college, but I knew, and I know the difference now that I am happy with my hair and the routine that makes my hair happiest.
Finding the right curly hair products boosted my self-image, cut my time spent on my hair wayyyy back, and made my hair healthier.
These Products May not be for Everyone
If you have naturally curly hair, these products still may not be for you. My sister has natural curl and body to her hair, but her hair is a different texture and thickness than mine, so she requires different products. If you need to switch up your products or are on a journey to find the right products for you, I highly recommend these products as a starting point.
No matter what type of hair you have, I highly encourage you to take the time for yourself to find the right products. Try something out for a couple of months and see if it works. Experiment with different combs as well as shampoo, conditioner, and leave in products. Try dry shampoo. Try going without dry shampoo. Experiment leave in conditioner. Try a hair mask. Allow yourself the time to experiment and discover what works best for you. You are worth it.
My Must Have Curly Hair Products
I’ve been using Yes To Naturals Coconut & Argan Oil Ultra Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner for over a year now and I’ve been nothing but happy with it. In fact, just recently I switched up to see if another brand with similar active ingredients would work just as well….nope! There’s something about the Yes To shampoo and conditioner that just makes my hair happy. In the shower, I can tell my hair is getting the moisture it needs. Combing out my hair after the shower is smooth as butter. Once my hair is dry, it’s softer than ever. And the softness doesn’t go away either; it stays without fail until my next wash. I don’t have the split ends or frizz at the crown of my head like I used to. And best of all, my curls are sufficiently hydrated so they are happy and bouncy from the moment I get out of the shower until I get back in for my next wash days later.
The Conair Curly Comb is unlike any other comb out there. I don’t know what it is about the design that makes it work so well for curly hair, but it is the only comb I’ve ever used that doesn’t pull out my natural curl and make my hair frizzy and puffy. This comb allows me to keep my hair knot free and tamed until my next wash. I like to use it especially at my roots to smooth out places and volumize others. On days two, three, four after I’ve washed my hair, this comb keeps my hair looking taken care of. When sleep or an eventful day get my hair knotted up and off kilter, this comb puts things back in their right place.
Argan Magic Nourishing Hair Cream is by far one of my favorite curly hair products. After I have washed my hair, I towel dry it, put it in a bun for a few minutes, and then apply a dime sized amount of Argan Magic Nourishing Hair Cream. I comb it through from roots to tips with my fingers and then scrunch my hair all over. This cream gives my hair the perfect amount of nourishment to give my curls the bounce and shine I’m looking for. It keeps my hair soft and tame while defining my curls.
In addition to being great for after-shower use, this product is also great on dry hair. On days when my natural curls get a mind of their own and need to be tamed, all I have to do is work in some of this cream starting from the tips of my hair and working my way up and, voila! My curls are back in action!
The Argan Magic Restorative Hair Mask is a sister product to the Argan Magic Cream. I use this product every so often to give my hair an overall moisture treatment. After shampooing, I put in the restorative mask covering my hair from roots to tips all over and let it sit for the recommended amount of time (sometimes I leave it in for a few minutes longer just for good measure). Once I rinse out the mask, my hair instantly feels more hydrated and rejuvenated. I can see the difference immediately in the way my hair shines and in the definition of my curls.
5. Turbie Twist
The Turbie Twist is a must-have for all hair types in my opinion. This easy-to-use towel is perfect for after shower use. It’s the ideal way to wick out the bulk of the moisture from my hair without causing harmful breakage. After gently combing through my hair with the Conair curly comb after washing, I toss my hair up in my Turbie Twist for a few minutes. In addition to drying my hair, the design of the twist gets my curls going in the right direction, too.
Over the years, I have fallen in love with Good brand hair elastics. They carry various types of hair ties for all hair types in fun colors and styles. But for me, the best option for my curly hair is the Goody Ouchless Ribbon Elastics. These are so soft that they don’t pull my hair or cause breakage when I’m styling. In fact, I keep one around my wrist at all times just in case! Plus they are cute to wear in your hair or around your wrist.
